Nyrstar Workers reject pay offer

20 November 2009

Most union members working at the Nyrstar lead and zinc smelter at Port Pirie have voted to reject the latest wage offer from the company.

Taken from ABC news web site:

Most union members working at the Nyrstar lead and zinc smelter at Port Pirie have voted to reject the latest wage offer from the company.

About 250 workers have met in the smelter car park.

Australian Workers Union branch organiser Mick Hopgood says about 210 rejected the offer.

He says industrial action will resume on Monday and he expects more negotiations to take place with Nyrstar management and Fair Work Australia next week.

"We will be sending a letter to the company and informing them of what occurred this morning and we will be informing them of the employees' intention in relation to the bans that they want to continue with and they will start again on Monday night at seven o'clock," he said.

The workers are seeking a rise of 2.5 per cent of each of the next three years.
